Hi all, I just want to pose this as a warning. My boy and I were jacking up the car to replace the shock absorber yesterday. We were using the emergency Jack provided with the car as I did not have the block for my standard Jack. Suddenly there was a bang and the car dropped back down to the ground. The threads had pulled through on the emergency Jack without warning. I always use Jack stands, but the car was not yet at the height to put them in, besides you use emergency jacks at the road side and probably do not carry a Jack stand for punctures.
The Jack has a steel thread that runs through a nylon block. It’s pretty silly when you think about it as in this application, it should be steel on steel.
Anyway, I am going to complain and be ignored, but this is a safety issue rather than a wear or warranty issue.

In the early 70s I had a Morris Marina 1.8 TC same car as the cops used one summer evening using the original jack I was greasing the lower ball joints I'd just turned around to grab the grease gun when there was a crack & bang noise & the wheel disc hit the tarmac when looking underneath the chassis the jack had embedded itself into the sill & floor pan if I had not took my arm out from under the wheel arch within a split second I would have lost it & that was using an all steel scissor jack I have one in the boot with a full sized spare which is rated at 2 tonne but still wouldn't trust it on its own !
