Changing Xenon Bulbs

Has anyone tried to do it or gone to the dealer? Just watched fifth gear where changing a xenon bulb on a Renault Megane would cost £200
Xenons are supposed to last longer, but £200 is a bit different to a one minute job on a VW Golf

Xenons are usually a dealer piece of work as they also require the ballast checking. I have yet to see a Xenon bulb blow.

It should also be remembered that a good percentage of the replacement cost is the bulb itself, they are not like a Halagon which is cheap as chips. They run at 20,000v as they are an arc type gas discharge unit. The ballast is what creates the power.

Yeah, I suppose no one wants to be electrocuted. Its the only thing that makes me think about going to Europe in the car.

Why?

I have had Xenons in cars since they came out. I have never had one blow and I have never seen one blow anywhere. As I said they are a totally different technology to a standard bulb.

Don't worry about it!
