Calling all R owners

Hello all

Well I pick up the delightful R pictured below on this coming Saturday.....(a post divorce present to myself) and I can hardly wait. I think I was lucky enough to secure the lowest mileage model currently on sale in the UK (or it was at the time of purchasing) with just 2700 miles on the clock.

So my question is, what do I need to know about this car??? Does anyone have issues with speed bumps, particularly the ones that are square patches opposed to the ones that go across the complete road. Can you straddle them without issue. What kind of mileage are we getting out of the front tyres in normal driving and the brakes........

I managed to secure a two hour test drive with this car and the seats are just sublime

Welcome to the world of R ownership. You won't be disappointed.

All the speed bumps that I've come across the R can straddle them without any problems. I still slow right down just in case but she far in 8 months of owning my R, no issues.

I'm obviously still on my first set of tyres and still got lots of life in them yet (serviced in November) and I've just turned 10k miles. My brakes were all good too. I'm sure other R owners who have maybe had a change of tyre and brakes will be able to tell you more.

You just need to keep an eye on your oil and coolant. This usually need a top up every 3- 5k miles, in my experience.

One thing to note, watch out for the torque steer. The first few times you really floor the throttle it's a bit alarming how the car wants to veer towards the vehicle that you are wanting to overtake, so leave lots of room and keep both hands on the steering wheel.

Enjoy the car, it's great fun to drive. Country roads were made for the R. The handling is sublime. Just be careful because before you know it you will be touching 3 digits on the speedo.

Congrats on the R!

I have been with the R to London twice (downtown, outskirts) and never had any issues with speed bumps. The front overhang is not too long, so there is no issue.

Brakes and tyres. I can tell you a lot about those as I do close to 30.000 miles a year on the R alone. But tell me first how is your driving style.

Thanks all for the replies!

I have a few of those mounds on my daily routes so it's good to know I'm relatively safe.

To answer some questions I was asked by RCZ R- my driving style? Fairly smooth if I'm honest (even the instructor at Thruxton commented on this), and also I don't see the point of ragging it in areas of traffic, however a nice piece of open road and I intend to enjoy the performance. I can't remember the last time I changed a set of pads on a car, but as these seem to be quite beefy (and probably pricey) I thought I would ask the question.

RCZ1 - Thanks for the advice. I did notice the torque steer on the test drive, I had to over take a lorry and I just planted it and the car took off! Not necessarily in the direction I had originally expected. Great fun though. thanks for the tip on the oil usage as well.

5 days and counting.........

Based on what you wrote I'd say those front pads will easily be good for at least 3 annual services. I'd say over 30.000 miles.
They only will go earlier when you push the car and brakes to the limit.

If your car is still on the OEM Goodyear tyres (which are perfect for the R), the fronts will go after about 20.000 miles.
I have switched to the Michelin PSS but they do not work on the R. I'm going to sell them with only 3000 miles on them and switch back to the GY Assy 2.

Thanks for the info RCZ R. I will expect slightly less out of the pads then as the car is an ex demo, so no doubt the sales guys have had a little too much fun in it for my liking. As you can't buy these things new anymore I went for the ex demo.

I saw another thread on here saying there was only 271 registered in the UK.....?????? No wonder I have never seen another R on the road. Don't see too many of the standard car.

That's useful and interesting info on the tyres, particularly the PSS. I will gladly stick with the Goodyear tyres on my R. I've done 10k in my R so will be good for another year or thereabouts.

Is that a Howard's plate on the front , our identical car came from their Taunton branch as a demo ( only 500 miles ) we have now had it since Feb this year ( and is our second RCZ), it is awesome ,all comments made are very accurate , just watch that speedo , once you are out of first gear the torque is both outstanding and excillarating .

RCZ 22 - Yes you spot it right. However the car was located in Dorchester and I've had it shipped up to Yeovil for collection.

Are you in the Taunton area? I'll keep my eyes peeled for a fellow R.

I can write some bits about those PSS and why they do not work on the R. But on a separate thread. Just let me know :greetings-wavingblue:
