I am finally going to have to admit my ignorance...... What exactly is 'detailing' and will I need it when my long awaited car finally arrives?

What an admission  But fear not, as probably the majority of the members on here hadn't until we had RCZ1 inflicted upon us

I possibly like you washed my car with soapy water and a sponge. Then if time allowed we'd dry it off with a Chammy. If yet more time was available I'd get the Mer out and polish it too. Am I correct?

If so........... slap wrists to you and off to bed with no supper!!!

The RCZ1 way is much more detailed than that (see what I did there?) Any ways I'm not going to try to explain as the lady has done a great thread on it so click on this and feel guilty

Thanks Ron, I have been puzzling over detailing for the last three weeks. OMG Now I know what I will be doing for the first 3 weeks once the car finally arrives. I love it that only those with OCD also 'detail' the engine, obviously RCZ syndrome comes with some degree of OCD.

I am sure I will be detailing my little beauty.......

MBJ - what an admission ;)

Detailing is about going that extra mile to get your car looking just right. The little "details" all come together to create a stunning finish. Take for example my new car that I picked up today. Polish residue is all over the car where it's not been buffed off properly including in the parking sensors. There are water marks and drips in all the usual places on the Z that have not been wiped off. The inside of the doors and the door sills have water marks and dust all over them as does the underside of the boot lid. There's marks on the black roof arches which (hopefully) will come out and the engine bay, well. My Pearl's engine bay after 2.5 years looked like a brand new car. The engine bay of Ruby looks 2.5 years old.... :(

No wonder the salesman kept saying today, it's a lovely car this (he was referring to Pearl) and even the Manager was gushing over her and the seats. In fact, the dealership are interested in maybe doing work with my leather retrimmers in the future as they are so impressed with Pearl's leather.

Anyway, beware detailing does become addictive BUT you end up with a car that looks stunning when it's all finished.

Hi RCZ1, I have now been researching local detailers and think I have identified someone to detail my precious purchase when she arrives. I have read your description of detailing from another post and I dare not take it on myself, but I may ask to watch when the experts are let loose on her. Thanks for your advice, even though I have been driving for over 35 years, I now feel like a complete novice. Cheers.

No problem MBJ. There's no reason to be scared. It does seem daunting at first. Just start by doing little steps at a time and then before you know it, you doing a full detail. It's a good idea to watch the professionals doing it. You will pick up lots of little hints and tips. Good luck :)

That's what I did too. Once you have seen that to maintain it is easy then you can do it. I agree what RCZ1 and others do is a step beyond my comfort zone. I will not take a rotary sander any where near my car. Okay I know they don't call it a sander, they use a poss name like a Dual Action (DA) polisher but it works like an orbital sander and would have the same effect in my hands.
