Hi Guy's,

Still on the lookout for a 2.0HDI mk1 or mk2 no luck yet. Just wondering what kind of mileage your cars are sitting at? I've had a look on ebay, auto trader etc etc and the highest mileage one I was able to find was a 2.0 HDi sitting at 165,000 miles - the highest petrol I was able to find, in comparison, was only 104,000.

I've always been told diesels last longer than petrol engines, is it really still the case though? trying to get and idea of the life spans of both engines - If you could post your year, engine type and mileage that would be great!

Thanks,
-Anton

You don't drive it enough!
My GT86 is a 13 plate, and had 16k on when I bought it a year and about 20 days ago. It's nearly at 27k now.

Diesels should last longer, but I'm doing fairly well with a petrol R that is on 137,000.

I am torn between going for a diesel and going for a petrol, realistically I only do about 10 miles each day to my work (5 miles each way). The roads are mainly 30mph some parts go up to 40 / 50 mph - no motorways on my way to work.

So I've worked out I'll only be putting between 4 to 5k on the clock each year, lets say 6k because I might drive it a bit more because its a nice car.

I know the HDi engines are reliable, my dad has a boxer 2.2HDi sitting at 120k and my 1.4HDi in my 207 is sitting at 116k. Had a friend who's 306 also had a HDi 2.0 I think, sitting at 250k when he sold it - So I know the diesels are reliable and if maintained can go on and on!.

I am trying to figure out what the life span of the petrol engines are like if maintained, I can get a petrol much cheaper than a diesel and with lower miles. At the same time I am trying to figure out (for my circumstances) which is going to be cheaper to run for my short journeys, the petrol or the diesel? taking road tax into account.

The fact that there are many diesels sitting at 100k+ and i've only found a couple of petrol's at 100k is a bit off putting, maybe there isn't many petrol's that have reached the 100k+ mark yet because they are used less and for shorter distances? after 10 years though you would think there would be a few. I am trying to find out commons faults with the petrol and what could go wrong.

At the moment it's a toss up between a 2.0HDi and a THP 200.

Thanks,

There are loads of petrol cars over 100k and above, to be honest neither petrol or diesel are any good for short slow journeys but generally the diesel is the more reliable unit.

Looking at the sort of usage you intend to use your car for, you would be better choosing a petrol engine.

Although the diesel is generally more reliable than the petrol, they don’t like short journeys without having a good “blast” fairly often.

One of the few issues with diesels that comes up on these pages is the dpf clogging. I think a petrol would be more suited to your intended use.

Yes,

to concur with DKZ.

Diesels do not like short journeys and will give problems with the DPF since the car will not be getting near warm enough to burn off the particles on the filter, resulting in blocking up of said filter and they can be expensive to fix.

As has been said there are plenty of high mileage petrols and I recall seeing a 200 with 225k on the clock, I think to be honest my brother pointed it out to me, but anyway goes to show that they can also give high mileage if looked after.
I would say the most important thing with the petrols... is oil oil and oil, always keep the oil checked and topped up, do not wait for the oil light. Running the oil low is a bad bad thing to do.

Anyway, which ever you choose you still get the looks both inside and out ! All the RCZ's are great driving cars.

Good Luck and happy hunting.

Cheers M....

Out of curiosity, did you ask or get told how come it had averaged only 24 miles a week since new? Would have been far cheaper for the previous owner to have gone everywhere by taxi rather than suffer the depreciation, tax and insurance cost of a car that went nowhere.

He maybe intended to keep it for a long time and hit on hard times, I know several people who don't like putting much mileage on the odometer, but for me the RCZ is to nice a car not to drive.

And yes 26k on a 12 plate, little over 3700 miles a year, again very low, if I was in the market I would snap that up.

Both my R's had under 5k on the clock when I bought them, my second now has 20k+
