Screen flicker, loss, loose connection.

I've seen a few threads on here of people complaining about issues with the flip up screen in the RCZ. I have. 2010 156 GT and it has the same issue. On startup the screen flips up, sometimes it's fine, sometimes it has some lines running across it or is flickering. Adjusting it backwards and forwards gets rid of it, but the problem can come back if I drive over a pot hole.

It's obviously a design weakness, a connection that gets worn out with all the "flip up flip down" actin over ha years.

No one, AFAiK has posted a solution on any forum anywhere on the net.

Who's had it fixed? How much did it cost?

Who's done it themselves? How did you remove the screen for inspection? Did you have to replace the whole screen or could you repair the connection?

To make an ispection is relatively easy - you do not have to remove the screen.
1. switch off ignition - screen in closed position
2. press the screen with fingers gently on back side to flip-up partly.
3. with thin screwdriver (or similar) split back part of display, starting from sides - thats all, you can see cable and connector

If you want to change this LVDS cable
1. to remove screen:
- remove the screen decorative frame, better starting from windscreen side, no srews, it is just plugged
- on upper side you can see 2 torx to remove
- lift up a little and plug-out the bottom connector - now you are stuck only with rightside monitor cable (going from backside of headunit = radio)
- you need to plug-out the other end of LVDS cable - to fully remove screen
- how to remove radio - to get to its backside to plug-out other part of LVDS cable you can find on youtube..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxvq16kR3Nc

- after removing screen you have to free LVDS cable, to pick it out through the hole by cutting plastic clamp
- remove red plastic by pullin upwards, now you can push turning joint to outside
- disconnect cable and remove (tricky) it from monitor

Thats it

I've mentioned this exact problem a few weeks ago on another thread.
I tried re-installing the software updates but no joy.
Everything seemed to settle down though on its own, until today !!, Its now worse than ever, so the car is booked for it to be checked out next week.

My money's on a loose connection or worn out connector. It happens to laptop screens all the time. All that opening and closing, eventually the connection becomes worn out, dodgy and intermittently gives up (either leaving a black screen or other colour/display inperfections). Hopefully just the cable and not the screen itself need replacing in order to resolve it (as described above).

I'm taking the car in under warranty, as it's got about 6 weeks remaining, so I dont want to go fiddling about myself just in case they refuse to look at it.

Strange thing is though, if I open and close the screen the interference goes away for a good while. :eusa-think:

I've also tired tapping the screen and surrounding area but I just cannot get it to play up.
I've only seen the fault happen when the screen does its initial pop up when I first start the car, after that it is fine if I reclose and open the screen, and no matter how many times I start up the car and the screen pops up its ok for a while.

I think its one of those frustrating intermittent faults, that makes you feel like a prat when you take your car in but nothing can be found.
At least if I get mine looked at under the existing 6 weeks of warranty, I will have the argument that I had already looked at if it goes wrong later on when the warranty expires.

Thinking about it, I've also had the complete black screen but still having sound, again though if I operate the screen manually all is ok for a while.

Next time it happens video it on your phone so you can show the garage. There's lots of posts about this kind of issue online. I will only get worse until it's like mine, glitchy on every startup, but as you say, resolved temprariliy by moving/adjusting/opening or closing the screen.

Best to get it done under warranty now.

Left the Z with the dealer yesterday all day to sort out the "flickering" screen, on collection I was shown the job card for what was done, 5 hours work :?
Basically they removed the complete unit and wiring, which involes removing the lower dash, what ever that is ?

All connectoins and plugs replaced
I've been told that if the problem comes back they will fit a new screen
They've also extended the warranty on the media system for 6 months as my original 3 year warranty was just about to expire, so I'm covered if it does give up the ghost.

Only negative points are that they reset everything back to factory settings, so I lost all my map updates and speed camera alerts.
So it looks like I will be spending tomorrow updating everything, luckily I've managed to borrow the update discs back , but from what I can remember it takes ages to update and the car has to keep running.

Wow 5 hours to replace a lead?! Where on earth does it run from and two, I guess it's not simply from the Headunit up to the screen... The wonders of modern cars.

Well I haven't got round to checking mine out myself yet and I may be taking out an extended warranty and if I do I hope to get it sorted under that. If not, I'll let you know how I get on. Don't suppose your job sheet lists the part numbers of the bits they've replaced? That could come in handy of I end up doing it myself.

Apparantly theres a number of connections under the dash that feed the head unit which any one of could be the cause of the problem, this is why they look at/change all of them, they also update the firmware to the latest release, which mine had anyway.

Just looking at the plug or cable on the head unit end could be a waste of time. You might be lucky and have a loose connection at the head unit, but the dealer goes all the way into the dash to check the full length.
The head unit was taken completely out and they definitely removed the glove box and the bottom of the dash under the drivers side :eusa-think:

Apparantly the extended warranty that we can purchase from Peugeot, after the original expires does not cover for this sort of fault, and even if it were to pay out it would not cover the full amount, that is what I was told.
The figures I've heard to replace the NG4, inc labour is around £1800
I've had my original warranty cover extended by a few months to cover the head unit because the fault is/was intermitent, and it has now been looked at under the original, which is about to expire.
I will still be purchasing the extended warranty package though in case something else goes wrong.

Well it's been less than a fortnight since the Z went in to have the NG4 screen flicker problem solved, and the fault has re-occured, so it now looks like a complete new system will have to be fitted under warranty. :eusa-think:

I'll make the call tomorrow and give the dealer the good news.

Jim,
I hit a pot hole tonight and the whole screen went blank, but still had sound from the radio, then I went over a speed bump and the screen flickered back to life

I still think the problem is down to a connection or plug that works its way loose over time, which is what most owners with this fault seem to think is the problem, but my dealer thinks that the problem could be within the screen itself.
The service manager said that Peugeot insist that the wiring and connections are checked out before moving onto the actual screen, which has to be replaced as it's not a repairable unit.
If I'm honest its worse now since they "checked out" the wiring, than it was before I took it to them, hence why I think they've disturbed a connection that was only playing up now and then.
They've basically made things worse, which will now result in a total new unit, but may not solve the problem, if it's still down to the connections/wiring behind the unit :eusa-think:

But if they want fit a complete new system, then carry on, as long as they sort it out.

Didnt have time today to take it back, but hopefully I will tomorrow.

Cars booked in for two weeks time, as they are fully booked up.
Spoke to Service manager and he said it looks like it maybe having a new screen.
Apparantly the 208 is suffering a lot with this problem, and the only fix seems to be a new screen. :eusa-think:

I'm still not convinced though that this is not down to something coming loose, as mine only plays up when the screen is raised or lowered, or if i go over a bump/pothole .

The thing to remember is that it might be something intermittent in the screen unit itself. It will be full of soldered joints and connections too. If this is the problem, no auto dealer or auto electrician is going to be able to fix it. Specialist equipment is needed to repair things like this. The screen will be comparatively high value and not cost effective to repair, because of the complexity and specialist facilities needed. The cost of the time to diagnose and repair will soon outstrip the cost to replace.

Not necessarily just car radio/sat navs, but many electronics repairs will be based on time: if you haven't fixed it within 'x' minutes, scrap it.

However, it is a high value item so do as much diagnostics as possible before replacing or sending it down a long expensive logistics chain to repair will be the order of the day.

I am having the exact same issue with mine - warranty runs out in June, trying to book a service for next week. How did yours finish up, was it corrected with a new screen being installed?

New screen now fitted (last Wednesday), everything seems ok, then again my old screen could go for weeks without showing a problem.

Before Peugeot ok'd the new screen, under warranty, they insisted on some "fix's" first that had to be tried out on the old screen, one fix was a software update, which I found a bit amusing because the problem with screen flicker was happening going over speed bumps or tapping the actual screen, which to me indicated a hardware problem, not software.
Another of the fix attempts was to open up the hole a bit wider, behind the screen where the cable comes through and attatches to the rear of the unit, apparantly on some other Peugeot models this is causing a problem with their sat nav/radio units because the cable is being "pinched" because the hole is too small, again though this fix did not solve my problem.

I only had 7 days left on my warranty when Peugeot gave the ok for a new screen, but the car had been in 3 or 4 times over the last 6 weeks or so.
At the very beginning the service manager said it needed a new screen but had to go through the Peugeot "fix's" first.
I've now taken out an extended 12 month warranty on the car with Peugeot (£219), but even if I had not taken out the extended warranty, the new screen would still be covered against further problems for another 3 months I believe.

Not sure how much truth is in this, but the service manager who has been dealing with this sat nav issue from day one reckons the cost to finally fix this problem was £2400, which included the new screen.

So on that note, I would advise you or anyone else having this problem to get their car into a dealer ASAP.
