Pennines and Peak District – 14th July 2018
(Peaks and Valleys Tour)
Who’ll join me for a drive along some of Britain’s best roads while taking in the spectacular and sometimes breathtaking views through the Pennines and Peak district?
As this is my first time at organising such an event, I’m going to limit the number of cars to a maximum of 6.
The Proposed route is 89 miles long and takes 4.0 - 4.5 hours to complete (stops included).
Meet at 10:00 with a view to setting off by 11:00.
Stage 1. Meet up at the Rams Head Inn (J22/M62 Saddleworth) for a drink and natter with old and new friends, followed by a short drive to Greenfield, making a brief stop to take in the fabulous views of Dovestone valley and surrounding peaks.
Stage 2. Proceeding along A635 through Saddleworth moor for a further 6 miles, we then head South and drop down into the village of Holme before climbing to the top of Woodhead road making a brief stop at ‘moss view point’ to grab an ice cream and admire the magnificent view of Holme valley.
Stage 3. We begin our decent down Woodhead road admiring the mountainous views before joining B6105 towards Glossop (there are some great views of the reservoirs along here) stopping en route at Torside for a toilet break.
Stage 4. We continue our journey into Glossop until we reach Snake Pass (one of Britain’s best driving roads), after 15 miles, we turn left onto Mortimer road and head north through the Yorkshire countryside until we reach The Strines Inn where we’ll stop for refreshments and admire the beautiful surroundings.
Stage 5. We continue driving north for a further 7.5 miles until we join Woodhead Pass (another one of Britain’s best driving roads), after 10 miles we’ll re-join Woodhead road for a second chance to take in the amazing scenery surrounding Holme valley.
Stage 6. From Holme we head North West continuing our journey through the Yorkshire countryside admiring the picturesque Pennine peaks until we reach our final destination.
Stage 7. We finish our journey at Hollingworth Lake Country Park, a truly beautiful lake complete with its own sandy beach. Here we complete our day by having thoroughly deserved meal at the Wine Press Inn.
