Since someone resurrected this post, i would like to ask when it is best to check oil level. When the engine is cold or warm?

Once i checked my oil level when the car was left overnight and it showed below medium level but then i let the engine idle for few minutes and it showed above medium level. :eusa-think:

Always on stone cold engine and when parked on even surface.

I always check it on a cold engine, and obviously on a level surface.

Easier said than done, for me here.
Our car park is a bit like a helter skelter with a gradient of 15% or more.
So I need to go off our land to find a flat bit and I ain't pushing cars these days, and it is up to get out of the gate.
If I stopped anywhere long enough and it was flat and I remembered (fat chance!) then I could fanny about with dipstick and cloth.
Think I'll rely of the inbuilt level check and the blokes servicing the motors.
ATV, in it's home, is level, but does about five (yes 5!) kms a year, so with an ITV (MoT) and service every other year, no probs; and I'd spot leaks on shed floor.

You can check the oil after driving, but you have to leave it for least 30 minutes.
Again on level ground is preferred.

you have to make sure that the engine has gone cold, not only for an accurate measure, but it can also damage the dipstick taking it out and pushing it back in when the metal has expanded.

It's a 'piece of pissel' . . .

My way:

Reasonable clean cloth - old white rag, undies even? Don't through them at Tom Jones afterwards.

Wait ten mins. or o/night. Pull out nasty dipstick and clean with cloth.

Re-insert (stubborn thing - don't force - remember what your first love told you?) Treat it as a sensual thing.

Remove and quickly sit horizontal on the rag.

Wait two seconds, and roll in one direction.

If the oil is on the second silver measure point, then it is full.

Spec. refill is 4.25 litres on oil refill. I always put in 4.3 litres.

Cheers.
