Help Please: ESP & ABS Warnings

I had these warnings come up a couple of months ago after getting a bit bogged down in a muddy field and subsequently cleaning mud off the wheels with a jet washer. The fault disappeared though. I've now got the same ESP & ABS warnings coming up and I was just driving slowly on wet roads. I've got a local auto electrician I can try but before I do that is there anything I can check? Any sensors I can replace or parts I can inspect / clean?

I've got a OBDII code reader but it doesn't diagnose any faults as I think you need a specialised code reader for brake faults.

I could leave the fault for a week but I don't know if it will always flash up or if it will clear when the fault disappears, maybe something just needs to dry out?

Sounds like a job for WD40 (other lubricants are available) if you can find out where to squirt it. :roll:

The warnings disappeared yesterday. I will have to wait to see if I get them again when driving in the rain next. Does anyone know, please, where the ABS sensors etc are installed? I will then be able to inspect them and possibly clean them with WD40 or whatever.

I think they are installed somewhere near the inside of the wheel

The ESP & ABS warning message came back after the car was standing on the drive in particularly heavy rain - I hadn't even driven it anywhere. And they've stayed on for at least 200 miles. It looks like there are two parts that could be at fault on each wheel - the wheel ABR sensor and the antilock wheel radial target. Does anyone know, please, what the likelihood is of it being either part? Is there any way to test these parts to identify which wheel is causing the fault?

I can get the magnetic ABS sensor ring on Ebay for £13 so I guess I could buy one and just move it around each wheel until I cure the fault but it would be far better if there was a way of using a multimeter or similar to identify which wheel is causing the fault and whether it's the ring or the ABR sensor. The ABR sensor looks far easier Or maybe it's a matter of just cleaning one of the parts?

You need to get the codes read and see what's actually at fault.

I went round and cleaned all the sensors and the fault is still there so I've booked it into a very good local auto electrician for Thursday. Their diagnostic machine will identify which wheel is at fault. He says nine times out of ten it's a faulty sensor but another likely fault could be a broken wire due to constant suspension movement.

It was a broken wire to one of the rear wheel sensors.

You might have an additional fault you haven’t picked up on as yet As you mentioned it comes on, on corners.
I would check your wheel bearings, as play can lead to the sensors leaning in on the reluctor ring. Then I’d be checking that the ring and the sensor aren’t damaged or worn. There is also the possibility that there is a crusty rust behind the sensors that tend to push them closer to the rings, they all seem to do this.
All do able at home tho, with basic knowledge and a handful of tools.
