I had the air conditioning re-gased not that long ago - 6 months. It is now no longer cooling. At all. I live in australia and with 30 degrees and 90% humidity I am dying.

It would seem I have a leak but does anyone have any experience shares on where these cars could be leaking from in the system. Just so I can better brief a mechanic as I mostly experience that they don't know these cars and I end up paying for their learning curve!

I had mine re-gassed recently. The air con is not great in mine I'm afraid. I find the best way is to turn the temp to minimum and turn on the aircon button and the fan manually. I don't use the auto button. Make sure if they re-gas it, they put in dye so they can find the leak (if any).

I just had mine re-gassed as well, (not that in Tassie is needed most of the year), I took it to an aircon specialist. What the mechanic explained is that if it lasts less than a year they will use a fluorescent dye to identify the leaks with UV light, so no guesswork there!

Cheers

There are now electronic gas detectors with a rod that are much more effective than using fluorescent liquid.

The important thing is to go to an air conditioning specialist who can find the leak. In workshops without the proper equipment they only refill the gas.

If it's a leak in the condenser, which is the radiator in front of the cooling radiator, repairing it isn't very expensive. This is the most common leak because it's very exposed and can be hit by small stones.

A faulty thermostat can knock your aircon off as mine did

Could you expand on that for me? I had my condenser replaced in October as it was leaking and air con was very lacklustre with a hissing noise from the vents, worked well for a while but the hissing noise soon returned and now the weather has warmed up it's clear it's not cooling at all. No hissing noise now though so I suspect it's not even engaging the compressor (I'll check tomorrow).

I am also pretty sure my thermostat is stuck open as it was taking a looong time for the engine to get up to temperature over the winter and temperature fluctutations depending on speed. Could that be related?

My aircon was tested & refilled but still dead then I remember fixing a mini with same fault so changed thermostat & fixed the issue remember the correct Engine temp info is needed by the ECU for numerous systems to work properly incl the aircon
