Advice on engine compartment

Hello all I was wondering if some of you boffi a could tell me if there is something missing from this engine bay. Got my car yeasterday and was having a better look around the car and found some loose plastic that concerned me. So when I removed it, it looks like there should be something beneath it.

Well what is that? An air intake?

Yes, exactly (pathetic as it is). You can replace it with something better if you're so inclined though.

Although it looks rather dirty all is there. I would look at sorting the crushed pipe from the air intake as it might restrict the air flow.
